Summer Reading
We've been waiting for the paperback to come out, and now finally it's the turn of The Sense of an Ending, by Julian Barnes - Man Booker Prize winner 2011. It's quite a short read so some people are carrying on reading The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna.Reading group guides are easily found on the internet, and Julian Barnes' website is also an interesting read.

Senior Reading Group Choice for February/March
The main choice this time is The Help by Kathryn Stockett - 'a vanished and unjust world: Jackson, Mississippi, 1962. Where black maids raise white children, but aren't trusted not to steal the silver... ' Also, as some people have already read The Help, The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna, set in Sierra Leone.
An ongoing project running alongside the usual choices is a Dickens book to celebrate the author's 200th birthday, and people have chosen to read Great Expectations and/or The Pickwick Papers.

Dickens' 200th Birthday
Charles Dickens is celebrating his 200th birthday on 7th February 2012.
To join in the celebrations I propose that we read at least one of his novels during 2012, alongside our other reading choices.

Mornings in Jenin, by Susan Abulhawa
A multi-generational story about a Palestinian family. Forcibly removed from the olive-farming village of Ein Hod by the newly formed state of Israel in 1948, the Abulhejos are displaced to live in canvas tents in the Jenin refugee camp. We follow the Abulhejo family as they live through a half century of violent history. Amidst the loss and fear, hatred and pain, as their tents are replaced by more forebodingly permanent cinderblock huts, there is always the waiting, waiting to return to a lost home. The novel's voice is that of Amal, the granddaughter of the old village patriarch, a bright, sensitive girl who makes it out of the camps, only to return years later, to marry and bear a child.

Henry VIII has proclaimed himself Supreme Head of the Church and the country is waking up to savage new laws, rigged trials and the greatest network of informers ever seen. Under the order of Thomas Cromwell, a team of commissioners is sent through the country to investigate the monasteries. There can only be one outcome: the monasteries are to be dissolved.
